HW. do the informal write-up for the heat of combustion lab. In addition come up with some ideas for how you could redo the lab with better results (how could you modify the procedure with resources we have available to decrease the effect of the sources of error you discussed). The lab assignment sheet is posted below.

Also come to class with a brief background discussion for the fight club IA lab, as well as your plan for data collection. Below I have posted two exemplars with comments from IB for a DCP/CE IA (one with low scores and one with high scores) please check these out to get a better sense of what is needed for a good score, also you can always reference the rubric.

I have updated the calendar since the "snow" day stole one of our days. Also I realized we have Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week which I thought we didn't have (hooray for "extra" days) so check out the calendar.

Period 2 students, be sure to bring your test in next class one of the problems on my key was wrong and many of you probably deserve an extra 1.5pts!!

HW. you should be working through topic 5.2.  Also I am posting some Topic 5 notes and some extra practice problems here.

Also I am attaching the outline for our new grading/assessment strategies as we discussed in class.

Hello thermochem!!! I really want to thank all of you who have given me feedback regarding our class, and please if any of you have any concerns or input please chat with me. I will always try to tweak things as we go to make it better for all of you.

HW. be sure to have read 5.1 and start looking at 5.2, we will be jumping into the calculations next class.
for the lab please answer the following questions (this will be turned in/checked off in the grade book) no need to type it up though, it is due next class.

-alcohol on gauze, Why did you see the temperature change you saw? describe any heat transfer in terms of system and surroundings.

-melting ice, describe the heat transfer that took place between the water and the ice. Also using the text or your notes from last year try to determine mathematically the amount of heat that was used to melt the ice.

-heating water, how much heat energy was needed to cause the temperature change you measured (find the appropriate equation and constant(s) in the text.

Also I will be typing up a summary of the changes with regard to assessment structure for the class as we discussed so you will be getting that shortly.

Also I have added a new resource to the resources page, an interactive IB chem syllabus you might find useful.

We are jumping into topic 5 next class. To be prepared please read topic 5.1 in the text and review your thermochem notes from STEM. I was going over my plan for the year and we have already fallen a little behind, we need to pick up the pace.

Topic 4 Exam next class. Below is the key to the review problems. Also don't forget, the videos on the resource page, the syllabus (in the guide book - click on the IB chem tab and it is on that page), and the text pages are all good resources for your prep.
