How did I get here?

Picture
Believe it or not, but when I was in high school I hated and almost failed chemistry. Don't let that make you lose faith though. I like to think that my less than ideal experience in high school gives me a unique perspective in my classroom. In college I became so interested in chemistry and good at it, that I chose to major in chemistry and get involved in research. In 2004 I received my bachelor's degree in chemistry from Western Washington University. In 2011 I received my Master’s in Teaching from Western Washington University so I could teach Chemistry and general science. Since then I have added an endorsement in Biology. I have developed a passion for teaching and believe that learning to think like a scientist is one of the best skills a person can have.
I am so happy to be a part of the Sunset community.   .                                Go Apollos!!                                  .

Instructional Philosophy:

Science is a language and framework for understanding the natural world. It differs from other ways of knowing in that the framework is based upon a strict set of checks and balances. It is reliant on testing and retesting, disproving and re-evaluating hypotheses, always striving to deepen knowledge and expand our understanding. My role as teacher is that of facilitator, mentor and guide in helping my students develop an understanding and appreciation for science. I will demonstrate the connections to the world students already know and understand, using science to help them understand and interpret concepts ranging from world issues to the functioning of their own bodily systems. I will ignite their curiosity by showing how exciting, relevant and fascinating science is, via demonstrations, experimentation, and direct observations. I will help them to develop an appreciation for the methods and rigors of science through active involvement in the scientific process. Beginning with the student’s prior knowledge and ideas I can help them construct their own true understanding about science through inquiry. Using open discourse, multiple instruction styles, and a variety of assessment methods we will develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts and ideas; as well as the ability to think logically. Students will learn to analyze and scrutinize information, preparing them to be informed participants in our global community.

Outside of School.

I have two amazing brilliant and inspiring kids, and a wonderful and supportive husband that are the center of my world.
I enjoy camping, hiking, gardening, cooking, yoga, and being outside.
