For next week you need to write the Exploration portion of a lab. You will be designing this investigation and all of the specifics are up to you. The lab should investigate solubility in some way. Use the Lab report breakdown page as well as the rubric to made sure you do all that is needed. Essentially you are planning a lab and writing the background and procedure (everything up to actual data collection). This should be done for Monday/Tuesday of next week.

Also for next class get your 10.1 R&R notes done.

And we will be having a short quiz beginning of next class on 4.1,4.2,4.5,4.3

OK, so for next class you need to do the analysis and the challenge problems from the Topic 3 HW set. Also finish the post lab questions from the lab in class these are all (2-5) short answer style questions please try to be as thorough and articulate as possible.

Finally you need to do the group 1 and 17 video lab. Watch the videos linked below and the reactivity of the alkali metals and the halogens and write a 1/2 -1 page discussion of the similarities and differences in the chemical properties of the elements in these two groups. Specifically discuss the reactions of the Alkali metals with water and with the halogens and discuss the reactions of the halogens with halide ions.
Here is a fun video showing the reactions of the alkali metals with water, and another that is less exciting but a little more informative.
Here is a slightly boring but very informative video of the reactions between halides and halogens.
here is a video on sodium with the halogens. If you can find others that look at the other metals great!

I will post the key to problems next week. Be sure that you completed lab summaries at the back of your notebook for both of the labs we did for Topic 1. (Empirical Formula and Molar Mass of Butane) The are prescribed labs and you used quite a few techniques so get all of that down.

ALSO ... just a quick reminder that there are many useful links on the Other Resources tab of this website that can be very helpful if you want a different look at any of the topics. Rich Thornley's collection of videos can be particularly helpful and is IB specific.

Welcome to our blog!! I will do my best to post everyday if there is something you need to remember. So ...

HW.
  • Finish the calculations and analysis from the empirical formula lab. (In your notebook)
  • Read the molar mass of butane lab handout and do the sample calculations.
  • Watch this video demo of the molar mass of butane lab . We will be doing it in a very similar way.

Also please be continuing to study for the Topic 1 test on Thursday/Friday of next week. Come and see me if you need help on anything. Have a great weekend.
